INTERVIEW WITH THE BOHANNON FAMILY:
For Steve and Michele Bohannon, adoption was the best route to the family they wanted. They saw how many children needed loving homes and they opened their hearts to their only child Sarah. When they started to think about the possibilities of adopting another, however, they were of two minds and ultimately decided that their family was perfect with one very lively child.
THE ADOPTION OPTION
Psychologist Marlou Russell writes that adopted only children have many of the needs and characteristics of only children who are not adopted. But they differ because they may have biological siblings that they have never met or meet later on in life.
ONLY CHILD PROFILE: ACTRESS LAURA DERN
Laura Dern has a solid theatrical pedigree, but that hasn’t turned her into anyone’s lapdog. She chooses roles based on passion rather than the bottom line, and she has been able to shine in many different kinds of films. An unconventional risk taker, this only child has a clear sense of her own destiny.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ONLY CHILD TEENS
Teenage only children have a different reality than teens with siblings. Alexis White’s humorous piece about life as an only child teen, exposes some of the tough and tender elements involved in gaining independence.
Journalist and only child, Margo Howard, writes “Dear Prudence,” an advice column for the online magazine, Slate.com. Even though she was the only child of world famous Ann Landers, she never thought that she would follow in her mother’s footsteps. The two adored one another and the love and support they gave one another shines through in Margo Howard’s latest book, “A Life in Letters, Ann Landers’ Letters to her Only Child.”
